SCHOOL VACATIONS.

GORE. TiSfr-anyual "break-up" ceremony of the /faore Public Schcol took place in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The buildnig was crowded with children and parents and friends, and Mr A. Martin (chairman of the School Committee) presided.

1 lie chairman in a brief address re(W'ed the work of the year. He stated that the roll number had increased from ■*32 to 469, and the average attendance,; notwithstanding sickness, was such thatr the school was entitled to another as-; distant teacher. Changes had taken place in the personnel of the staff, which had lost Mr Lyttle and Miss Stenhouse alter several years' faithful service, andi the new members were Misses Johnson, | Earwaker, Duke and Mc-Kipna and Mr j I'. MacKenzie.. Miss Alexander and -Master Calder would leave this year m order to attend the training college. ! He was pleased to say that tile school j had maintained its reputation and out < i the 36 pupils who recently sat for examination. no less than 29 had gained proficiency certificates. Miss Howes was about to take a year's holiday, and he | i.lt sure they all wished her a pleasant: and profitable time and a safe return to Gore. Mr D. L. Poppelwell (Mayor) said that he could see by the smiling races before him that the boys and girls were hapny, in anticipation of a long holiday after a year of hard work. He need scarcely remind them that the future was full of responsibility. Those who were leaving the higher standards were on the threshold of the education ol life. They liad at school only ac<iu"red the means of equipping themselves in the various walks of life. Their whole life if properly spent was one of i (Vication. It was only a few years ■ ago when at Gore they had no further facilities for advancing their education, but they now liad the High School as a stepping-stone by which they might pass on to the University. They j could look forward to the future with! satisfaction, because they would create] a standard of education in the district anything yet experienced. ( In the future they would have men and women in Southland ni| every walk of life trained by experts to: fit them for any avocation in life. He urged them to take every advantage of their opportunities. He congratulated both scholars and teachers on the result of their work during the year and wished all a pleasant and haypy Christmas.

Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., said it wasj tho third school "break-up" he had; attended. He judged by the excellent, reports and by looking at the number j o'j prizes distributed that all had done their duty. The Gore School had turn-, ed out many good men and women, who were filling responsible positions throughout the Dominion, and he hoped these present would maintain the repu-j tation of their school. He compliment-; ed the staff on the result of the year s v.-jrk and congratulated the school on having on its staff a lady of the ability i of Miss Howes, who had gained a repu-, tation as an authoress, and in the holi-j day that lady was about to take he hoi:x?d she would have an enjoyable, time. He wished the school every sue-! cess. 1 Mr Joseph Hunter, M.A., rector ot the Gore High School, in a brief address said that in the Gore High School the stepping-stone from the primary school to the secondary was made as easy and gradual as possible. Those who came to | the High School would not find the work at the start so irksome as some; people were prone to think. The teach- i ers' lot was not always the most pleas-; ant, because they had more "bosses," if he might use the word, than any «)ther profession he knew of. He congratulated the schooiton what had been done, and wished all a merry Christmas a happy New Year. Mr John Golding, headmaster, explained the method of prize-giving, stating that where friends 2ave special iprizes for special work the distribution Avas sometimes hedged around with difficulties. The best bov or girl in the class would always get the best prizeHe would like to draw special attention to one boy. He had been asked to give him a chance for Standard VI. when he had not passes! Standard V. He was loth :o do it. bur, eventually he agreed to do so and the boy came out top of Standard VI. The bov ('cterwl to, Thomas/ iVilso!:, - secured 64 marks, would have entitled him to Applause.) He wished to rxpress *th<iiiks to the staffs to the committee for their able assistance during the year. , ~ The chairman then distnwfexl tho prizes as follows: —

There was a largo attendance of parents' and friends of the scholars, and Mr Walter Gee (chairman of committee) presided. . "The chairman said he was pleased to note the great interest manifested in the- welfare of the East Gore School. Dining the year it r had undergone a unique experience, inasmuch that with the exception of one teacher there'had been a complete change in the teaching staff. They had lost Mr Gilchrist as headmaster after many years' faithful service, but in Mr Steadman they had found a worthy successor and the school still retained that reputation for wlisdi it was noted.—(Applause.) The committee during the year had kept sri view the general improvement of the j school grounds. The work of drainage,' surface and underground, was now in hand, the school grounds would be ploughed and improved, and in order to make- the grounds and surroundings what they ought to be the Education Board was co-operating with the committee in the work, which when completed would mean an expenditure of about £SO. On the whole they had experienced a very successful #sear. Tho ' fact that so many pupils had gained. their proficiency certificates was a nroof of the high standard of the East Gore ■ School. I

At the conclusion of the prize distribution Mr Anderson complimented the ' teachers and committee on the success-1 ful nature of the "break-up." It was the fourth "break-up" he had attended | 'that day, and lie was pleased to see: such a happy lot of children. He was also pleased to see so many attendance , certificates gained by the pupils. He had attended a school "break-up" the previous day where theve were four! members of one family who had ail j gained first-class certificates for attend-1 anco, and these children had to walk 1 four miles every cla,v to go to school. He was pleased to see the great advancement in physical drill, and lie I thought the decision to teach physical drill in the schools instead of military training was a step in the right direction. The East Gore School in the past had gained a high reputation by the inspectors' reports, and he had fi'o doubt that reputation and good name would be maintained. He complimented the staff on the year's work and wished all a pleasant holiday. Mr Joseph Hunter, M.A-v, rector of the Go?e High School, then presented the proficiency certificates, to the successful candidates. He sahd that those who Smd gained proficie)r<?y certificates ha(3 ,'fin opportunity of entering the public Service or entering a secondary sei/001. He urged the ).:,iiVents to facilitate as much: as possible the giving to their children of n two gears' course at h'ast at a High Schoffl. The hoys who pot a secondary and university education took the top positions in life. A vote of thanks Was accorded the teaching staff and donors of prizes, and the proceedings terminated by the sing- j ing of the National .'Anthem.' M&T&URA. The annual "break-up" of the Ma-'] taura Public Sch«>il took place in the! Horticultural .Hal] yesterday afternoon, Mr R. Winning yc e,sided and expressed, the regret of Rev. Geo. McDonald (late! chairman of committee) at his inability) to be present aitfl also conveyed his-; good wishes for the success of the fun.es lion. The chairman congratulated the.' Sixth Standard pupils on the result of; their examination, 27 out of 30 securingi proficiency certificates and two getting 1 competency certificates. :

A con.caiUed recitation, "Song of the 'Sea," was given by nine girls. Recitations were also given by Misses Myrtle Walton, Evelyn Waddell, J. Curtin, Eirene Bull and Elsie Jew' and Master A. Milne.

| Mr Anderson, ai'ier paying a. compli- [ ment to Mr Gilchrist and the other tea- , chers for their good ivork, in addressing tho children adviseS them to be thor" ' ough in everything ..tlwy did. There was no room in the world for those who performed their work in a half-hearted wav. In all ages it had been the lot of women to hearten up the men in their business or warlike activities. A s it had been in the past so it would be in the future, and ho advised the girls to asnet their brothers in their work bv ktudly encouragement. The lads would soon be actively training to defend New Zealand. It would he the privilege of the ;girls, to assist by flew patronage every effort to further the scheme intended to protect' them from the invader. They saw by the daily papers what the noncombatant citizens of the countries at present at war had to suffer. It was to prevent this that the young men and lads were being trained •>nd the girls should encourage their brothers in <?very way to pursue it. Bv being thorough in their work, persevering in the attainment of all worthy oiiects, and considerate of their fellows, they would 'build up their characters "nd help to maintain respect for New 1 Zealand throughout the world. Hi .vished them all a pleasant holiday. The Mayor (Mr J. Louden) said that for jjjiprovetyfiflts it} tlje world we mjtst I
