Pioneer this morning, ascertained some interesting facts about the opportunities that exist on board vessels for New Zealand lads and that are not gen-j lerally known, either by the lads or ■their parents. It was learnt that there is an exceptional opportunity at the present time for New Zealand youths who wish to join the Royal Navy for short service, under conditions of employment and pay that are most favorable. New Zealanders are, it is j understood, received on the Pioneei | when vacancies occur under special 'conditions, the existing agreement be- | tween the Government and the British 'Admiralty permitting their leaving at j the end of live years, and includes a ' system of deferred payment, under which a young man can leave at the ! ago of 23 years with a lump sum of £250 to his credit in the Government Savings Bank, if he has completed his five, years' service, or such sum due if ho leaves before under exceptional circumstances. It is understood that "Vacancies exist for ordinary seamen, boys, and stokers, from ages varying from 15 years to 22 years, but every trade is represented on board a modern man-o'-war.
