Mr Frank J. TUiomo, a young clerk j of Newark, New Jersey, committed sui-i cide because lie had been promoted to| a. higher appointment and feared he t could not fill it properly. j A little stir was caused in the camp; of the 12th Regiment (Mounted Rifles) j at Balclutha yesterday morning (states' the 'Times'). While the men were go-| ing through mounted drill an officer had j occasion to speak to one trooper, and ; the latter gave a reply, in less than six words, which was characteristic of aj colonial when he is in a had humor. The j officer told off three men to arrest the | offender, and the latter, while apparently complacently walking along he side! his mount with the bridle over his arm, ! suddenly jumped on his horse's back and galloped past the sentry and through the open gate. Three troopers went off in pursuit, but the young fel- : low was well mounted and outdistanced ' his pursuers although lie was followed 1 1 on the south road for some miles. Tile i trooper, however, thought better of his ' action and subset;ui ntly returned to the J ,camp.
