The trouble in the Auckland Hospilal between the matron and medical and nursing staffs is to be inquired inio by a committee on Monday. The medical staff formulated complaints, to which the matron has submitted her replies. ; The medical staff alleges that the matron does not commence work til! 10 a.m. The matron replies that she began at 6.10 a.m. .and finishes at 11 p.m. The next charge is one of insolence and impertinence to her superiors, three, cases being cited, the first of which is that the matron satirically replied: "It is really very nice of you to take such interest in the nurse." The matron replies fully to each charge, deny- : ing any intention of satire or insolence. She adds that there is nothing in the by-laws to indicate that the members of the medical staff .are hor superiors. A further charge is that a charwoman was left in charge of two cases in the scarlet fever ward. The. matron replies that the case was on,& in which a maid was left in charge of two children who had been convalescent for a month while the' nurse was out, instructions being given that the sister in the adjoining ward should be summoned if necessary. The. placing of probationers in charge of certain opthalmic cases is another accusation. The matron replies that when she joined the institution she found juniors in charge of a tetanus case. She was informed by the assistant superintendent that it was customary to place special eases in charge of juniors under supervision of the ward sister. This had always boon done under the supervision of a sister. In conclusion the matron said that she did not believe the Board desired to see her atthe beck and call of the honorary staff. The inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deatli of Simon Weatherall, a minor, who was injured in Craig's coal mine at Roxburgh on May 3, and who died in the hospital on May 6 as a result of his injuries, was resumed yesterday before Mr Graham, coroner. After reviewing the evidence . the coroner said that the injuries had ■ Ijcen received by the deceased owing ,to his head coming into contact witli the roof of a tunnel. He would record : a verdict that death was due to as- : phyxia caused by dislocation of the '■. spine, received while riding on a truck in a mine, and he must add, "contrary ;to Government regulations." It was a lease of the old saying repeating itse'f .that, "accidents Would occur." j _ THE DEFENCE ACT. WELLINGTON, May 12. It was in the minds of anti-milit::r- . ists to hold u meeting of protest in the j Post Office Square this afternoon. They held their meeting, and it was a meet-, ling of protest; but the protest was mainly against the anti-militarists. j Various speakers essayed to address a couple of hundred persons, the maI jority of whom were evidently there for jthe fun they could get. A large soo|tion were much more concerned with i inquiring "if anybody had seen Kelly" i than with asking if anybody heard .Hickoy. In the intervals between the alleged musical numbers, side diseus- '■ sions with anti-militarists provided entertainment, and an ardent photo- \ graper also created a diversion. The ; meeting, which commenced in disorder, , proceeded discordantly, and after the I sneakers had been counted out several ; times it terminated in confusion.
