The Commerce and Tourists' Division of the Department of Agriculture, Commerce and Tourists has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand (dated London, January 27). (Note.—Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot.): — Mutton. —The market is quiet. Trade in mutton is very disappointing, there being only a very hand-to-mouth demand. Although there is a very limited supply buyers ;ire not inclined to make forward purchases of mutton at present prices in anticipation of heavy arrivals, but holders are firm. North Island realises 4J,d; Australian, 3jd; River Plate, 3:' d. Lamb. —There is a pood demand for all lamb. River Plato lambs are better quality than last year. New Zealand lamb, other than Canterbury, averages s|d; Australian, 4gd; River Plate, 4jd. Beef.—The market is very firm and is affected by the decrease in arrivals. New Zealand stock is almost exhausted. New Zealand hindquarters realise 4sd, forequarters '4d. A small quantity on hand was sold at this price. Butter.—The market is quiet, but holders are firm. A moderate supply is expected, and an increasing quantity is going to the Continent. The average price for the week for choicest New Zealand butter was 131s; Australian, 128s; Argentine, 128s; » Danish, 1355; Siberian, 1295. Cheese. —The market is firmer and there is more demand. The average price for the week for finest New Zealand cheese was: White, 72s Gd; colored, 71s Gd; English cheddar realises 90s. Hemp.—The market is* a shade weaker. Very heavy shipments are expected from Manila. The market is dependent upon the Manila report. New Zealand good fair grade, on spot, per ton, is worth £2l 10s; fair grade, £2O 10s; fair current Manila, £2l ss; forward shipment, New Zealand good fair, £2l 15s; fair, £2O 15s; fair current Manila, £23. The output from Manila for the week was 31,000 bales. Wool.—The market for merino is a shade weaker. The crossbred market remains firm. Cocksfoot Seed.—The market is firm. WHEAT AND FLOUR. The. wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,505.000 quarters, and for the Continent 990,000 quarters, Atlantic, shipments absorb 170,000 quarters and Pacific .shipments 45,000 quarters. The. total shipments to Europe for the week amounted to 750,000 quarters, including Argentine 13,000 quarters, Rus- ' sian 105,000 quarters, Danubian 117,000 / quarters, India 104,000 quarters and Australasia 120,000 quarters.
