THE ENGLISHMEN AT HOBART. HOB ART, Jan. 2(3. The match Tasmania, v. England was begun to-day before a large attendance. The local men's showing was mediocre. The visitors bowled and batted well, Woolley being particularly good, and boundaries were hit with unceasing regularity. Rhodes too performed brilliantly, the partnership with Woolley accounting for 130.

The Tasmanians were disposed of in their innings for 124, Windsor (24) and Paton (22) being top scorers. TJie Englishmen have lost- one wicket for 191.

THE SHEFFIELD SHIELD. SYDNEY, Jan. 26. In the- final match for the Sheffield Shield, Victoria in the first innings made 129, Armstrong (51) and Smith (29) being tli2 chief scorers. Kelleway took 3 for 18, Hazlitt 3 for 50, Emery 2 for 42, Cotter 2 for 17. New South Wales have lost 7 wickets for 240 Gregory 48, Bradsley 23, Minnett .in 65, Emery 22, Cotter in 58.

THE PLUNKET SHIELD,

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 26

The Plunket Shield match, Canterbury v. Wellington, was commenced this afternoon in fine weather and on a perfect wicket. Canterbury won the toss and batted, making an excellent start. They had 100 for one wicket; but this good average was not maintained, four being down for 113. Then R«ese and Hickmoth made a good stand, taking the score to 170. After that the wickets fell cheaply until eight were down for 228; but a good stand by Patrick and Boxshall carried the total to 274, the innings closing three runs later. Patrick batted very soundly, but Lusk was very lucky, giving no less than three chances. Hickmoth played a chanceless innings and showed capital finishing | strokes. Wellington, with a quarter of I an hour to bat, lost two wickets for 10 runs. Scores:
