Reid. who is 32 years old. and is serving .a sentence of two years' imprisonment on fourteen charges of breaking and entering, was ordered to be kept on bread and water for two days, and to forfeit one month's marks. THE POLITICAL SITUATION. INDEPENDENT LABOR PARTY. PALMERSTON N.. Jan. 26. At a well attended public meeting to-night an Independent Labor Party was formed in Palmerston North. Messrs Veitch and Robertson, M.P.'s, addressed the gathering. A LAD DROWNED. DUNEDIN, Jan. 26. Sydney Charles Mitchell, aged 15 years, eldest son of Mr J. W. Mitchell, sailor, Balclutha, was drowned to-day while bathing at Kaka Point on Fort Molyneux beach. Mitchell and several other boys were having a bathe when Mitchell got out of his depth. He was soon brought to shore, but too late, strenuous efforts by Dr Fitzgerald failing to restore respiration. Dece?sed was a bright lad and had achieved distinction in all subjects at school. FARMERS AND TRUCKS. FEILDING, Jan. 26. Farmers are complaining strongly of' the treatment they are receiving at the hands of the railway authorities in regard to getting trucks for sheep and cattle. The trouble is that local officials are unable to give definite information as to when ordered trucks w he available, and will take no responsibility. The Farmers' Union is to approach the Minister for Railways on the matter.
THE LIQUOR LAW.
NELSON. Jan. 26.
Francis Allington, wife of the licensee of the Telegraph Hotel at Takaka, was fined £3 and costs on Thursday for supplying liquor to an intoxicated person. Decision in similar cases against the licensee was reserved. The informations were the outcome of a recent trap accident by which a man named Cassidy met his death.
