MR BOTTOMLEY FILES.

* A CHEQUERED CAREER. PER UNITE!) PRESS ASSOCIATION. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPB.—COPYRIGHT. Received December 29, 9.10 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 28. Mr Horatio Bottomley (Liberal M.P. for Hackney South and a well-known company promoter.) has filed. His liabilities are stated to be £170,000 and proofs have been lodged for £220,700. A recent review thus sums up Mr Horatio Bottomley: "A chequered career as a company promoter found its most eccentric development in 1906, when Mr Horatio Bottomley, after unsuccessfully contesting the division in 1900, found himself the victor in South Hackney with A plurality of 3479 votes beating not only '-the old and trui Conservative member, Mr T. H. Robertson, but also a Free Church minister who had been run by the unco , guid Nonconformists who did not like |Mr Bottomley's racing proclivities. J Politics apart, he stood frankly as a j racing man, and electors were given to understand that a vote for Mr Bottomley was a vote of gratitude to Wargrave. It will be remembered that during the time when the 'Sun' was under his control, Dr Parker, Dan Leno, and other celebrities were given opportunities to show what they could do as editors. His successful speech in his own defence at the Hansard Union trial was generally allowed to be one of the ablest feats of the kind on record. Yet he did not impress the House of Commons in 1906, when he was refused a first reading of a Bill against street betting—a most unusual rebuff. He did better in ,1908, when he scored off the Government, frequently on the Licensing Bill." The Joint Stock Trust and Finance Corporation recently summoned Mr Bottomley in the Chancery Court for £36,000 damages for alleged misfeasance. The case was adjourned.
