OBITUARY.
MR RICHARD ALLEN. Tho many friends and acquaintances of Mr Richard Allen in this district will regret to hear of his death, which took place from heart failure early on "Wednesday morning at his late residence, Invercargill. Mr Allen was best known to the farmers of Southland as the secretary of the SouthlaiiclTarmers' Union, which position ho had occupied since the inception of the union. The late Mr Allen was born in Essex in 1836, and his first business ex|>erience was as a clerk at the London Docks. He emigrated to South Australia in 1555 and was associated with the pastoral and shipping industries. Mr Allen subsequently entered into business in Adelaide and later became manager of tho Glenclg Railway Company. In 1893 ho came to New Zealand, settled at Invercargill and took a leading interest in the Preservation Inlet mining industry. After the boom of gold mining thero Mr Allen took up an accounetancy and agency business at Invercargill .ond took a keen interest in several societies and institutions, such as the Fanners' Union, Chamber of Commerce, Navy League and Horticultural and Musical Union. In recent years Mr Allen gained kudos for his suewss witn the Central Unemployment body of London in bringing out to New Zealand lads of a good type and placing them with farmers in Southland. Mr Allen war, a prominent churchman, being connected with the First Church. »he deceased had practically completed his arrangements to disjiose of his business v/ifh a view to visiting the Old Country and there spend his declining years with his only daughter, Mrs John Edmond. Mr Allen was predeceased by bis wife Son>o years ago.
The death is announced at Invercargill of Mrs Grace Inglis Millar, which took place on Christmas Eve. Deceased was in her 80th year. With her sister she arrived in the colony on Christmas Eve, 1849. In 1857 she married and settled at Invercargill. The late Mrs Millar was a well-known pioneer and with her husband took a keen interest in Oddfellowship, being prominent in tho formation of the first Oddfellows' lodge at Invercargill. She leaves her husband, two daughters and one son to. mourn their loss. The death is announced of Mr Hugh Miller, for several years secretary of fho Otago Hospital Board. Tho late Mr Miller joined the hospital staff in l!i()6, and was highly esteemed by t>\\ who knew him. He was una married.
