CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES.

WENDON PUBLIC PICNIC. The promoters of the annual picnic at tendon, which took place on the .school grounds on Christmas Dav, were iortunato in having a splendid day tor the occasion. As usual a large number of people from the district and neigh, boriiood thronged the grounds and pleasantly passed the time in watching the various athletic contests or chatting in groups, while the younger picnickers of both sexes indulged in the timehonored round games. I here was a 7;;ng and varied programme of events, both for children and adults, which were got off with promptitude by the officials. Messrs R, Henderson (chairman), John Aitken (secretary). W. There being a. general holiday at the mines and sawmills, large numbers came into town yesterday and saw the sports. Lovely weather prevails and there are plenty of amusements. The number of passengers on the railway and coach.se much surpassed those of previous years, giving indications of general prosperity. The postal work was very heavy during the whole of last week. POSTAL RECORDS. WELLINGTON, Dee. 27. T'lie Wellington postal officials from December 20 to 23 handled s-2!j<i bags and hampers, an increase of 8(1!) on the 1910 figures. The value of the stamps sold in Wellington for the same period i\\as €1022, an increase of €720. These are record figures in both instances.
