SCHOOL VACATION.

GORE.

'/The annual "break-up" and prize 'distribution in connection with the Gore Public School took place in the Dominion Hall yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of parents and friends, Mr A. Martin (chairman of the committee) presiding. The chairman expressed the regret of the committee that the headmaster (Mr John Golding) was absent through illness and said it was hoped- that by the end of the holidays he would be restored to his usual health. In briefly reviewing the work of the year the speaker said they looked back with satisfaction on what had been done. The inspector's annual report had been highly commendatory and the number of pupils who had gained proficiency certificates was most creditable to tie staff. Many of the boys and girls who attended the school a few years ago had continued their studies at the High School, Training College, and University and several had gained' scholastic distinction, thus showing that- the good work of the Gore School had stood them in good stead. The roll number had increased during the year from 41G to 446 and the average attendance proportionately. He was sorry to report that they were about to lose the services of three of •their pupil teachers —Misses Steel, Hamilton, and Taylor. These young ladies had completed their term of pu-pil-teac)iership and were now available They were devoted- to tfieir duty and the headmaster was highly pleased with their work. He hoped their successors would be as successful.

Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt complimented the staff of the school en the result, of the year's work air' congratulated the children on the?,'- s--nurt appearance tmd good conduct. Mr Pratt addressed himself directly to tin- children pointing that to live a good life was better than riches and to develop character the highest achievement of all. Rev. J. Farquhar.-on Jones also briefly addressed the meeting. He urged on the boys and girls to attain the faculty of being methodical —slow but sure was a' good, maxim. Goodness counted more than cleverness and truthfulness and manliness were characteristics they should develop. The importance of attention to little things was a matter he would recommend to I bom. In conclusion he wished them all a happy Christmas. Mr G. J. Anderson, M.P., emphasised the remarks of Mr Jones on the importance of little things. He said he -wished to compliment the staff and the committee on the success t hat was attending the school, and he particularly wished to refer to the honor conferred upon the school by having amongst the members of the staff one who hadl gained a colonial name as a writer and authoress, He referred to Miss Howes. (Applause). He urged on the boys and girls to so fit-sdy that they might gain knowledge rto become good citizens. In conclusion he referred to the subject of military training in:\±he schools and 1 expressed the hope that all would take an interest in it.

Mr Joseph Hunter, M.A., rector of the Gore High School, expressed his pleasure at being present as he took a deep interest in the primary schools.' It was from the successful pupils, in the primary schools in the district that his High School was made up. He was well pleased with the pupils that had <vime to the High School and he believed that those who were coming this year for the first time were as good as their predecessors. He concluded by wishing all of tliem a merry Christmas and! an enjoyable holiday.

The chairman announced that the •school would reassemble on the first Tuesday in February, 1912, and that 'the annual school excursion would take place at the Bluff on* Wednesday, Jan- ' uary 24. During the proceedings the senior scholars under Mr Grenfell sang two part songs very sweetly.
