"NOT FITTED FOR WAR!"
* . LORD ROBERTS ON THE ARMY. WAR MINISTER'S DENIAL. BY ELECTRrC TELEGRAPH. —COPYRIGHT. PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. Received December 18, 8.45 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 17. Field-Marshal Lord Roberts (ex-Com-mander-iii-Chief), writing in the press, deprecates Lord Haldane's (Minister for War) optimism. He states: "We have just been on the brink of a great war but the Regulars are not fitted for war. Their rifles are inferior to the French and German and the artillery is scarcely more satisfactory. It is difficult to write temperately respecting the Torritorials, who lack the essentials for modern warfare—discipline and shooting with precision." Lord Haldane, replying, said he would rather pay more for an increase in the Navy than an increase in the supply of half-trained soldiers. Despite what was said about the efficiency of the German soldiers, our own Regulars were the first in the world.
