PANIC IN A CHURCH.
PILPIT APPKAI, T<» WoMK.N An extraordinary seen,- occurred at St. \\ oolos Church, Newport. Moll., oil April 9, when, to the sudden failure of the electric li<rht, tlu* building was plunged in darkness. The ordinary oveniiijj; service was over, and the members ot the choir were rendering a sacred cantata to a crowded congregation. Without the slightest wurninir every went out and the sillil1i_r ceased. People stood up, women screamed with alarm, and a few made lor the doors. When a serious panic seemed likely, the vicar, Jiev. 1). Tl. I Griffiths, entered the pulpit and reassured the congregation hy saving that all would lie rifiht within a few minutes. The fears of the people were filially quietened hy the choir to siiiji aeain thonijrh the darkness the old hymn, "Aberystwyth." Meanwhile tTTe cl'.urch-wardens Sloped their way to the emcrj/enev j_'as liurucrs, and gradually one by one the lights sprang into brightness. The congregation then remained seated while* the cantata was finished.
