MAYOR AND ENGINEER.

LIVELY COrNCIL MEETING. | FEB UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORXE, Feb. 9. Proceedings at the Borough Council meeting last night were of a lively nature, the meeting extending until 2.30 a.m. The Mayor complained that work was not being carried out in a proper manner, and coilneillors defended the local engineer. After a discussion which was at times acrimonious on a motion of censure, against the Mayor an amendment was carried by live votes to 1, "That this Council affirms its continued faith in the ability of the engineer and that it does not require to hear any further criticisms of the engineer by the Mayor." The Mayor's complaint was that the instructions of the consulting engineer (Mr Marchant) were not being carried out.
