Congress is likely to endeavor to amend the- reciprocity agreement with Canada; The papermakers believe that the States might be compelled to admit ■paper free before Canada reciprocitised. The Committee of Wiys;and Means in -the House of Representatives admits that there is such a danger. Mr Knox (Secretary of State), approached by the manufacturers, declared that the paper schedule was merely tentative. It would be possible, he said to change the schedule without affecting the treaty and this would probably be done.
CASE OF CRIMINALS.
Received February 9, 9.55" a.m. LONDON, Feb. 8. At the Liverpool. Assizes Sir W. 'Grantham in sentencing a Canadian criminal said prisoner was "the sort of reciprocity Canada had for England— in sending criminals here to be punished. In other matters she seeks reciprocity '-' with the United States."
