The fireman was fined : £5. The guard of the first train was cautioned for not having the tail lights burning. Signalman McDonald, Soutli Yarra, was dismissed from the service but was recommended for a less responsible position. Driver Melville, nf the second train, was dismissed from the service for not obeying the signals. His fireman was found not guilty of a similar charge. The claims for compensation in connection with the Richmond railway disaster (which occurred on July 18 in a fog, two trains running into each other and many persons being killed and injured) total £120,000.
