At the Invercargill Court yesterday, before Messrs W. Scandrett and (i! Froggatt, J.P.'s, Robert Alexander Hogg, 33 years of age, was charged with, on the 23rd inst., at Brydone, stealing £4, the property of William Shirley. The accuse:! pleaded guilty and elected to be dealt with summarily. Sergeant Brookes conducted the case; for the prosecution. The facts were that the accused had been employed turnip thinning, and occupied a hut with Shirley. He left on Monday morning, coming to Invercargill, and after his departure Shirley missed the money, which lie had kept in a portmanteau. The police were informed and arrested accused, who at the time had £1 Is 9d in his possession. The sergeant stated that Hogg was convicted in Oamaru in 1907 of false pretences and discharged, /he Bench sentenced the accused to three weeks' imprisonment, and authorised the police to hand the money found on him to Shirlev.
