i ATHLETICS. KAIWERA PioA'FC. s The tenth annual Kaiwera picnic was i held on Friday last in a paddock kind- > ly lent by Messrs D. and J. Kobert- . son (writes our correspondent). The fc day was not a pleasant one; a terrific i wind—in fact, a gale—blowing all the ; time, which made matters very un- ' pleasant. The ground, however, was :■ nicely sheltered by a good belt of trees and the force of the wind was not so much felt. There was a good attend- ■ ance of the public, visitors from all the ■ surrounding districts putting in an ap- ' pearance. The ladies of the district provided baskets and lent valuable assistance by , attending to the wants of the people. : A dance was held in the evening and a - most enjoyable affair it was, everybody enjoying themselves. The writer would like to say a word to certain young men who appear to think thev do not enjoy themselves, and that a 'dance is not complete, unless they have a barrel of beer in their midst. Where ladies | and children are present surely they can leave beer alone; it is most objectionable when the latter are concerned. There was no liquor present at the dance last Friday night and how pleasantly everything passed ofF—a striking contrast to other functions that have taken place. The majority of the people would be delighted if the young people would keep liquor in its proper place, and more people would turn out to entertainments. 1 hope the- young fellows will take the hint.
