In time of war 800,000 men will be liable to serve under the new Defence Act. i The Commonwealth has not sufficient rifles to equip this number, but the small arms factory will be working by the end of the present year. THE IMMIGRATION QUESTION. Received August 24, 10.20 a.m. MELBOURNE, Aug. 24. The Minister for External Affairs (Mr E. L. Batchelor) said in the House of Representatives that this session steps would be taken to secure for the Federal Government more control of the labor conditions. The Government would then be in a better position to take up the immigration question. It was necessary to render Australia safe by effective occupation.
