A small steamer named the South Africa, which was carrying 300 tons of dynamite, caught fire at Port Adelaide (seven miles north-west of Adelaide, with" a population of over 5000). The river brigade manned lifeboats and subdued the flames after two hours' tremendous excitement. An explosion would have wrecked most of the town.
