Reuter's New York correspondent states that Professor Hale (director of the solar observatory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Mount Wilson, California) saw Halley's comet despite the moonlight. The tail had a distinct spread fanwise of several degrees. The observations showed the comet disappearing in the distance. Received May 23, 8.20 a.m. OTTAWA, May 22. Professor Birkland, after observing the comet at Finmark 4 Canada, sugegsts that the tail is composed principally of electric rays.
