EDUCATIONAL MATTERS. A WANG ANT I PROTKST. "WAXGAXUI. March 17. A conference ot district school committees to-night protested against the reduction of the capitation by the Government. AN EXPENSIVE DOG. PER DOTTED PRESS ASSOCIATION ' GISBORXE, March 17. The Supreme Court to-day was occupied in hearing a claim, Field versus Thompson, for the sum of £175 damages alleged to have been sustained by an attack of defendant's dog on plaintiff's daughter. The defendant sought to show that the plaintiff's children had encouraged the dog to stay at their home, an€l he had also provoked the animal. Considerable evidence was advanced showing the fiery disposition of the dog. The jury awarded the ilaintiff £6O damages, the defendant also being called upon to pay £9 medical expenses and Court costs.
ALLEGED LIBEL. ACTION AGAINST 'TRUTH.' PEE UNITEE PRESS ASSOCIATION WELLINGTON, March 17. The alleged libel action. Bertling v. John Norton, proprietor of 'New Zealand Truth,' claim £2OOO was continued to-day, and was not concluded when the Court rose.
