CANADA AND THE STATES
TARIFF AVAR FEARED. OTTAWA, March 16. While shrewd observers at 'Washington arc still hopeful that President Taft will yield to tho advice of the Commissioners sent to Canada to negotiate regarding the tariff, the authorities at' Ottawa apprehend that a trade war with America is imminent. It is stated that if America imposes, the maximum ratas Canada will reply with a surtax of 33 1-3 per cent., and will prohibit the export of wood pulp.
