TO THE SOUTH POLE.
THE AMERICAN ATTEMPT. LONDON, Feb. 12. Captain Scott states that Commander Peary did not suggest the American Antarctic expedition until ho had received assurance that the Uritish welcomed friendly rivalry. Captain Scott is arranging for cooperation as regards meteorological ami magnetic matters. Captain Scott considers that the Americans' is the longer route, but possibly the easier, as present knowledge suggests a gradual slope from the Pole to Weddcll Sea. 'l'he main difficulty would bo to find a suitable wintering spot in Coats Land. Captain Uartlett, tlu> Englishman who commands tlie American expedition, starts aboard the lloosevelt on September 1 and the vessel will coal finally at Punta Arenas in December. Tho Antarctic night- will bo spent near the SOth parallel. The expedition relies for transit on dogs, including six which Went to the Xorth Pole. CAPTAIN SCOTT'S FINANCES. LONDON. Feb. 12. Captain Scott lias collected £32,000, enough for the purchase of a ship and outfit, but is seeking to raise a further £9OOO in (ireat ISritaiu lor salaries and a further sum in Australia and Ne.v Zealand. Already over 7000 applications for posts in the expedition havo been received and tliev are still pouring in.
NEW LAND DISCOVERED.
LONDON. Feb. 13. Dr Charcot (commander ol the French expedition) lias arrived at Punta Arenas (in tho Straits of Magellan), on his return from the Antarctic. Ho reached 70deg. south, longitude 12 west, where he discovered new land westsooth of Alexander 1. Laud.
