THE KAIPARA'S MISHAP.
SEVERE DAMAGE SUSTAINED. PES UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION AUCKLAND, Jan. 15. A diver who went down to examine the Kaipara found a hole on her starboard siclo near the bow six inches wide and five feet long. Probably there are others, judging by the quick inrush of water. The hold was flooded to a cfenth of 32 feet. The vessel is down to her hav.-sar holes, Jan. IG. The work of discharging cargo, the value of which is estimated at £140,C00, was proceeding all day, several smaller shiploads of cargo being brought back to tlie wharves. Two divers examined the vessel yesterday, one of whom reports that the vessel is torn for a considerable distance on the starboard side and has a hols on the bilge four feet by five feet. Some rivets are torn out and mme plates are pushed in. It will probably take a good deal of work to repair the vessel. Further descents were made today, and the work of temporarily repairing the ship with a. view of getting her into dock was begun. Members, of the Harbor Board and the harbormaster, interviewed, state that Auckland's harbor is perfectly safe. Many theories as to the grounding of the vessel have been advanced, all differing widely. Immense crowds visited the j seen a today, THE CARGO. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 16.
