REBUILDING A CITY.
.—« THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO. Received October 19, 8.40 a.m. SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 18. The Mayor of San Francisco has expressed gratitude to the officers of the liritisii Squadron for attending the celebrations held to mark the reconstruction of the city after the great earthquake. "The destruction of San Francisco was one of the greatest disasters in history, and the speed of its rehabilitation is the greatest marvel in history," said a recent visitor to New Zealand to a Northern piessman. "In less than three gears' time we have greater building accommodation of a better class than we had before the fire. All the buildings that are being erected are of a higher class than those that stood before the disaster. It is the marvel of all who see the remarkable progress that has been made, unprecedented in the history of similar The loss by the earthquake, he explained, was lour or five million dollars—much less than the consequent fire loss of about 500 million dollars. San Franciscans, by the manner in which they at once set about rebuilding, had proved themselves to he the most cheerful losers in the world. The administration, too, was now much improved.
