RIVERSDALE ENTERTAINMENT.
Th« open night of the I'iversdalo Literary and Debating Society was held in the Oddfellows 'Hall on Wednesday evening (writes our correspondent). There wab a large attendance and Mr J. Smaill presided. Mr F. I{. H. Sutherland (secretary) read an able and wellarranged paper on 'Charles Dickens," and at intervals quotations from the novelist wero road as follows:—Miss Clearwater, "Skit on Dickens' liook Titles" ; Miss Stevens, "Pickwick's Fat Boy" ; Miss Mary Templeton, "Mr Bumble's Courtship" : Miss Clearwater, "Mr Bumble's Domestic Troubles" ; Mr G. L. Heenan, "Martin Chuzzelwit Interviewed." The duet, "What are the | Wild Waves Saying:-'' by the Misses Smaill and Maclunes; and the song "Death of Little Nell" by Miss M. Templeton were most acceptable items. Messrs W. J. McCutcheon ami G. Green also contributed solos, receiving vociferous recalls. Supper was served by the. lady members of the society before dispersing. At next meeting a. debate will be heard, "Which has the Greater Power, the Sword or Pen:'" Mr 0. L. Heenan will argue for the sword and Dr Watt will champion the pen, there being four supporters on either side.
