MATAURA ATHENAEUM
A i'OUWAjil) AIOVJSMISAT. A meeting j 'l in+'inbns ol tho Mataura Athenaeum was held in tin* rending room on Friday night, when tlic.ru were about fifteen iadiiw and gentlemen ]>ri'si'iil-. Tho object of the nwcting was to discuss tho question of raising Imids for tho purpose of purchasing more books. Tho Muyor (Mr A. Balnea ves) presided, and expressed pleasure at seeing so many young ladies and gentlemen interesting themselves in Ihe matter. 11l years past it had been customary by tho aid of entertainnienlci to raiw? a substantial amount, the net proceeds of which wero subsidised by the Borough Council, thus enabling thorn to secure a fair amount of the latest literature. I.ast year the concert realised £9. the subscriptions totalled ,CB. and (lie Borough Council advanced about CI -I. This matter required a little more enthusiasm 011 the part of the citizens of the town than hitherto. In a town such aw Mataura, with h population of from 1200 to 1-100, they could only register a total membership of 3f), and thus" iresout would no doubt be surprised to know this. He was sure that if the matter were taken in band they could increaßO their membership to Iwo or tlrreo times the present number, and thus obviate the necessity of calling on the public to raise funds to keep (he shel vps tilled with up-to-date literature.
It was decided to hold a concert and dance on a date to be arranged, and the following committee was appointed to make the necessary arrangements:— Messrs Braxton, Carver. Clarke. Kvison and C. M. Inglis (secretary). The first part of tin' concert will take tin' form of a minstrel entertainment. and Mrs Jarle.v's waxworks will form the second part. A meeting of the commit tee will lie held this week, when preliminary arrangements will be made. Tho usual vote of thanks to the chair concluded tho meeting.
