A Mafia (secret society) gang iu Palermo assassinated an American detective named Petrosini in broad daylight in the public squaro for investigating their connection with the Black Band Society. Petrosini defended himself with a . revolver aud received many wounds. He did more than any man iu the United States to bring Italian criminals to justice. The Mafia is a secret society of Sicily. Its members aro bound to avenge and protect ono another if punished for brigandage or crime by tho authorities. The Government, though putting down its more violent manifestations, has (ailed to crush tho secret organisation of tho society.
