Mr Kettle, S.M., gave judgment to-du\ in the case in .which Frank Holt, a passenger from Sydney, was charged with lnutng 190 copper tins in his possession after having declared he had no dutiable goods. The Magistrate found Holt, guilty of a technical breach of the Customs regulations and forfeited the tins and ordered him to pay treble duty. .Mr Kettle, commenting on the proceeding, said: "1 don't consider it necessary to break open people's luggage and throw Iheir things about like this. Crown ollicers should make tilings as easy as possible for people. 1 don't think such proceedings necessary except in very special cases."

The tins seized had at some time been used for opium.
