ATHLETICS.

CKOSS COUNTRY RACE. The Gore Harriers held their first annual cross country race of five miles, for Mr E. A. Pigeon's cup, yesterday afternoon, starting from the . post office. The field was very small, some five members only facing the starter. A large crowd assembled to see the start, Lionel Smith and W. Trembath, off the three minute mark, being tiie first to start. These were followed by H. Y. Cameron, 10 seconds later. They were well out of sight before R. E. Bust (35sec) got away, followed by 0. L. Smith (scr.). The pace was good from the start, and the trail led over the East Gore hills towards Waikaka Siding and back over the same course. Trembath was first to reach the turning point with a good lead of about 300 yards in hand. This he maintained to the finish, winning easily from Bust (second) and C. L. Smith (third), in 3omin 22 4-sth sec. Next Wednesday the championship of the Club takes place, when it is hoped more competitors will start. The distance will be from three to four miles. The first prize is Mr Eaitt's gold medal. GORE CYCLING CLTJB. A most successful youths' road race under the auspices of the Gore Cycling Club was held yesterday afternoon, the course being from the post otlice to Charlton and back, a distance of eight miles. Of the 22 entrants, 20 faced the starter, and 14 finished in close order, which reflects considerable credit upon Mr F. Wall's' well-known J handicapping abilities. The first five or six men finished in a bunch, there being a fine race for first and second honors. Ladbrook, the scratch man. broke his sprocket wheel in getting oh" the mark, and was unable to compete. J. Bucholz, who put up the fastest unplaced time, made a most creditable appearance. He is a youth of tremendous muscular development, and should be heard of as a brilliant performer on the racing track in the near future. The result of the event was as follows :—H. Windle (lOscc. handicap), 23niin. lSsec, first ; C. Badman (linin. SOsec), 23min. lOsec. second: J. Allott (lmin. SOsec.) 23 min. Usee, third : J. Forbes (4min.). 26min. 23sec, fourth; J. Bucholz. (lOsec), 23min, 2Gsec, fifth. Windle not only won the event, but also put up the fastest time. The Club intends holding an open 2o mile road race shortly.
