ANNUAL SPORTS. President - John Maopherson, Ksq.; vicepreaidsnta—Messrs J. 8. Thomson, Geo. Mtuart, Arch. Stewart, Jas. Paterson, Jas. Butler and J. D. MoKcllar; treasurer —Mr Arch. Stewart; secretary—Mr D. Dickie; handioappers, Messrs Frank Christie, A. Stewart and M. Maley; judges—running and jumping, Messrs Geo. Stuart, M. MoPhee and T. The seventeenth annual gathering of the above society was held in Mr Mills' paddock, Balfour, on Boxing Day. This society again experienced delightful weather for Ibe ?ports, although the prospects of a line ufternoon were exceedingly remote in the e.trlir r part of the day, and no doubt the wet morni.ig interfered somewhat with the attendance, which, however, was large, the sum of ovur £25 being taken at the gates. There being no district counter attractions, patrons were present from Waikaia, Biversdalc, Ijiimsden, etc. The entries received were in excess of last year by about 30, and a good standard of excellence was maintained in all the events, due to the popularity the society has enjoyed for a number of years. The handicapping of Messrs Christie, Stewart and Maley was good, and the committee are to be complimented on the promptness with which the programme was carried nut. In the Pahiwi Handicap (first prize including the President's cup) Wm. Wallace, ttivursdale, proved an easy winner. In the Cumberland ■stylo wrestling (open) Christie entered a protest for not being awarded second money. It appears that the custom of the society has always been, in the event of a bye, to award second money to the odd man.' Koss drew the bye and both he and Christie were thrown by the winner (Mollitt) but they did not competo with each other. The protest will bo forwarded to the Duui din Caledonian Society if considered necessaiy. Mr James Paterson, Waimea, donated ii'l Is and the Mutual Cooperative Stores lus for children's races, and Mr James Butler supei intended the running of these. In addition to the cup the President (Mr John Maepherson) presented gold medals for the Scotch reel and bagpipe music, the latter being tiruiLXcd by champion Piper Duncan. The gathering was the most successful ever conducted by the society, and one and all appeared to thoroughly enjoy the outing.
