Monday, Jasoajis 5* The Oonnoll met at tha usual hour. Present, the Mayor (Mr D. MoFartana), floonoillore Bowler, Maeara, Poppelwell, MaoOibbon, Day, Sped en, and 81mpson. Mrs fi, Marshall asked the Ooonoil to put in a drain in front of her property i# Ashton street towards the river.—Drainage now under consideration. T. G. liaurenson again complained of the state of the sewer in Main street opposite the Criterion Hotel, stating that through some defeot in the pipes it flooded his cellar after every heavy rain.—Will receive attention. Peter Fisken asked the Council to transfer the lease of seatton 15, block 7, from him to Wm. MoDoweli.—Granted. Leonard Marshall resigned his appoint" ment as cadet in the Counoil office.—Accepted ; applications for the appointment to be called.
D, P. McKenzie complained of the accumulation of water in Ontario street, East Gore, which ocoarred after every slight rise in the Waikaka stream. Owing to that foot passengers had to go through his property, destroying his fences and crop. * He asked that immediate steps be taken to remedy the evil, otherwise he would be compelled to take proceedings.—Work is passed and will be carried out as soon as possible. It was resolved to hold a special meeting on the date of the next ordinary meeting, at 7.15, for the purpose of fixing the half-holi-day for the year. The district railway engineer asked the Council to continue the formation of Stratford street beyond the frontage of section 5, block 12, in order to give aocess to a new nouso which the Department was erecting in that street.—Works Committee to report. Applications for auctioneers' lioenees were granted to A. A. Mac Gibbon, B. Ireland, M. Carr, D. Harnett, and J. R. Sharp. Accounts as follow were passed tor pay:TSfneru'' 8s I ® (i • electric light, £OB 5s lOd; abattoirs, £7—total, £221 7s Bd. The saleyards-keeper reported that 204 cattle and 233(> sheep passed through the yards last month. For the same period seven horses were impounded and there had been six prosecutions for straying cattle, convictions following in each case. He had had a hard nght to put down the straying oattle nuisance, but impounding and bringing offenders to Court was working a magical cure. By and by he hoped to have all offenders, even the worst ones, under control. The grass in sonic of the streets lequircd mowing.—Received. The dog tax for the year was fixed at 10s, and 5s for drovers 1 dogs (not more than three). - Mr R. Dewar was appointed returning officer, treasurer, and collector of rates and rents for the Borough. The Clerk was instructed to prepare a return showing the amount of rates and rents outstanding. Councillor Day drew attention to the bad state of the asphalt paths in various parts of the town, and the Works Committee was instructed to attend to the matter.
After considerable discussion of a conversational nature upon Mr Hay's soherae of sewerage and drainage, it was resolved on the motion of Councillor Simpson that the matter be considered when permanent levels are available. The Council thereafter adjourned.
