FOOTBALL.

ALBION v. WAIKAKA VALLEY.

Notwithstanding the unfavorableness of the weather yesterday afternoon, a team from the Albion Club journeyed to Waikaka Valley and played a game with a fifteen from the newly-formed clnb there. The match was played in a paddock at the rear of the blacksmith's shop. The Albion captain woi the toss and decided to kick "against tin wind, which was blowing fairly strong durint the whole of the game. From the outset thi Valley team worked well, the Albion trying to cross "their line two or three times, but failed. In the first half, cons.de. ing the state of the ground and the ball, the Albion backs got on some veiy good passing rushes, but the good defence of the Valley team prevented any score being registered. When ends were changed the Albion made good use of the wind prevailing and ran up their score (five tries) in fast time. In the scrum work the visiting team were far superior to their opponents, the Albion securing the ball nearlv every time. For the Waikaka Valley team" Manning, McColl, and Deans played the best games. In the back division of the visiting team Lynch, as wing three-quarter, played a fine game, and in this department was ably assisted by Latham and Campbell. Special me.ition cannot be made of any of the Albion forwards, as all worked hard and each got in some good play. Tries were obtained by A. McAskill, D, McAskill, Campbell, Lynch, and Whytock. The Valley team were handicapped through a number of their players not being well enough versed in the points of the game, but with a little coaching and practice something must yet be heard of them, as they have in their ranks very good material, which only requires bringing out. The Waikaka Valley boys are to be congratulated on the handsome treatment the visitors received at their hands, and special mention must be made of Mrs and the Misses Keid, who did much to make the stay as enjoyable as it could be. Mr D. Whytock g-ive entire satisfaction.as referee.

On account of bad weather at Invercargill yesteaday, no matches were played.
