MANDEVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL.

HARVEST HOME AND DANCE. The harvest home concert held at Mandeville on Friday night was attended by a large gathering, llr Jas. Sheed (who proved himself a very capable chairman) explained that the entertainment was in aid of the school funds. The takings constituted a record for that particular object. Borne delay was caused in comm.-ncing the concort in waiting for a contingent of performers from Gore, who had promised to assist, but for some reason did not put in an appearance, thereby causing considerable disappointment. The hall was prettily decorated, rellecting great credit on the ladies and gentlemen who had charge of that department. The vaiious items on the programme met with the heartiest approval of the audience, and the accompaniments, played most efficiently by Mrs Overton, assisted in a marked degree the success of the singers. The proceedings were opened by a tasteful pianoforte duet by Mrs Overton and Master J. Smith, which was loudly applauded. Mr A. Frederickson sang "Just as the Sun went Down"; this was followed by Mr A Hughes singing " Little Brown Jug," and, being encored, he repeated the last verso. A duet, " Flowers and Buttercups," by the Misses Archibald, of Otama, was well received and encored. Mr Heenan contributed a recitation, after which three little school lasses sang very nicely " Three Little Sailor Boys." Mr Dickson gave a clever step dance, and Mr Carroll, who was enthusiastically received, sang " The Crazy Doctor," this finding special favor with the audience. A recitation by Miss Hargest, entitled "Curfew must not ring to-night," was well rendered. A pianoforte duet, exceedingly well played by Mrs Overton and Master Smith, opened the second part of the programme. Miss E. Bheed followed with a pianoforte selection entitled "Heartsease Waltz," which she played in good style. " How Rafferty won the mile " was sung by Mr Carroll and was encored. The three little lasses again took the platform and sang " The Black Cat " admirably. The closing, and perhaps the best item of the evening, was a pianoforte duet by the Misses Archibald. Refreshments, kindly provided by the ladies of the township, were dispensed, after which the room was cleared for dancing, whioh was kept up till the small hours of the morning, to the music of Mrs Overton (piano) and Mr Green (violin), Mr Qerkin acting as M.C.
