The Ensign. GORE: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14.

The Bijou Minstrel and Burlesque Co. made a most successful appearance at Gore on Thursday evening. The programme was varied and meritorious, the individual efforts of members of the company stamping them as artists of unusual attainments. The company is to revisit Gore shortly. In this issue Mr T. Thomson, baker and confectioner, notifies that he has opened new refreshment rooms in Main street as a branch to his Medway street premises. Mr Thomson has secured a commodious building for the purpose, which he has stocked and fitted up in the most complete and up-to-date manner. A great sensation was caused in the House of Representatives last night by Mr Jas. Allen (Bruce) charging the Premier with having taken the fourth and fifth contingents to the Bluff for political purposes, and against the advice of tho medical officer. Since then several of the men had died owing to being taken by a cold route. Both the Premier and Sir J. G. Ward characterised Mr Allen's attack jjas a charge of the greatest character, and onus of proof lay upon him. Both Mr Allen and the Premier demaded a full inquiry.

The days of service of mails between Gore and Croydon Bush have been altered to Mondays, Wednesday and Friday, commencing from Monday, Kith inst. If Dr Kress is to be believed, tobacco smoking is a thing that is to be abhorred by all right-minded persons. The doctor once had occasion to give a confirmed smoker a Turkish bath, and the patient was dried on a towel. This towel was afterwards hung up on a line, and the numerous flies that alighted on it promptly fell to tho ground, overcome by the nicotine which had exuded from the user of the weed. This illustration was, of course, drawn from the doctor's American experience. From America, the land of marvels, if not of miracles, comes a story of a horse having been cured of influenza by Christian Science. The owner of the horse is Mr Hastings, a Boston banker. His wife and he are strong believers in Christian Science, and applied its principles to the sick horse, with the result that it soon got well. Their faith is said to be confirmed by the incident.
