Constable Keaney, of Mataura, has received a letter' from Angus 'McDonald, a member of the fourth contingent, son of Mr John McDonald, Hedgehope. The letter is dated from Knitsdorp, November 18, and mentions that the contingent had taken part in four engagements in a month, and had captured 180 Boer . prisoners, 5000 cattle, 1000 sheep, 30 waggons, and 300 waggon oxen. Enclosed in the letter was a Kruger. sixpence, which had on the front a ' striking likeness of Oom Paul, while on the back the coin is dated 1896, within a wreath, and the wording Z.A.B. at the top. Mr McDonald was at the time of writing in good health, and also mentions that Claude McGregor,' of Mataura, is also well. Dolamore and Co. have disposed of the business of this journal to the Ensign Publishing Co. as from Tuesday next (Ist January). After that date the Ensign will appear under new auspices. Mr Geo. J. Anderson (for ten years a member of the ' Otago Daily Times ' staff), will carry on the general management of the new company's business, Mr F. H. Hart is to retain^ control of 4he editorial and literary departments, while the printing and publishing departments will still be under the supervision of . Mr Duncan Macara. , ~^ The quickstep competition at the CKristchurch band contest, held on Christmas day in unfavorable weather, was won by the Wellington Garrison Band, with Timaru second and Invercargill third. On Sunday a lad named Thomas Espinall was shot in the centre of the forehead with a pea rifle at Hastings, Hawke's Bay. v He and another boy, Alfred Cable, were out gathering evergreens and entered a house. They found a pea rifle, and Cable sajshe was handing it to Espinall when it went off. 3,' he bullet has not yet been removed, and his condition is serious. Ctible has been arrested. An important communication has been received by the Government from the Secretary of State, and in consequence the Minister has decided to retain our contingents in South Africa until further orders. The Government has also decided to send drafts to the Cape to fill up vacancies in the contingents. Sir W. J. Lyne's being selected by Lord Hopetoun to form the first Federal Ministry did not meet with the approval of " other Australian statesmen. Sir W. J. Lync was unable to form a Ministry and Mr_Barton was sent for, Sir W. J. Lyne agreeing to accept a portfolio in the Ministry to be formed by him. ' The festive ' season was celebrated ■in a quiet fashion in Gore. On Christmas Eve the various tradespeople made special displays, and despite the rain ' the streets were crowded until a late hour. On Christmas Day special services were held in the Anglican and Catholic churches, and in the afternoon a number of picnics were held. On Boxing Day several sports meetings in various parts of the ' distriot attracted a large number, : others went .to . Invercargill to witness the rifle "match in which the local shootists wore successful, while picnic excursions to the Croydon bush attracted many more. During the afternoon the streets of Gore were quite deserted, and the only signs of life in the town were visible at the bowling green. Brown hack lost from Wa kaka. Dolamore and Co. have disposed of the Mataura Ensign to the Ensign Publishing Co. ' Tenders wanted for erection of a church at Balfour. ■ . Southland County Council oilice closed on 31st December and Ist and 2nd January. Train arrangements for New Year holidays notified. ■ t No publication of the Ensigs on New Year's Day. Wright, Stephenson and Co. sell furniture on Saturday. Late trains from Dunedin and Invercargill on 31st December. Waikaia Caledonian Sports on New Year's Day.
