GORE DISTRICT BAND OF HOPE UNION.
SINGING AND RECITING CONTESTS. The first annual reciting and singing 'dontests under the auspices of the Gore District Band of Hops Union were held at the Temperance Hall, Gore, yesterday. There was a large a tendance all day, notwithstanding the fact that the contests continued with suitable intervals from noon till 10 p.m. Mr Selby, of the Middle School, Invercargill, acted «as judge for the recitations and Mr Brett as judge for the singing, both gentlemen* expressing themselves in terms of warm praise of the quality of the efforts made by the various competitors. "Messrs Simpson and Ross judged the all-comers' recitations. All the Bands of Hope in the district (nine in number) were represented in the competitions, the entries in all cases being good: , At the opening of the proceedings the.
