RAILWAY IMPROVEMENTS

THE CLINTON NEW STATION.' Excellent progress is being made with the erection of new station and post-office buildings, to replace those destroyed by fire at Clinton some time back, and it is expected the work will be brought to completion in about eight weeks' time. The new buildings promise to be thoroughly complete in all particulars, and should rank among the handsomest and most convenient of any in the Otago section. The length of tbe entire building proper will be 240 ft. the outbuildings, etc., occupying another 50ft. A striking feature of the premises is to be a handsome portico in the centre of the building, 20ft wide, supported on four pillars, and projecting 10ft from the main premises. A large roofedover right-of-way, 16ft by 18ft, will give access direct from the platform to the. street. For the conduct of postal business, three spacious rooms and a lobby are provided fqjon tbe northern end of the platform. The postal lobby is to be 18ft by 10ft, the public office 18ft by 18ft, and "the registrar's office 18ft by 14ft: The stationmaster's room is to occupy 18ft by 12ft of space.; the booking office' (subdivided by three desks) 32ft by 18ft; guards' and porters' room (separated from the stationmaster's office by a fire-proof brick .wall) 18ft by 12ft ; public lobby, 20ft by 18ft ; ladies' waiting room, lfjft by 13ft, lavatories, etc., 18ft by 12ft. At tbe other side of the right-of-way the refreshment rooms are to be placed. These Include public bar, 18ft by 14ft, dining saloon, 40ft by 18ft, and kitchen 18ft by 15ft. A verandah^ 2sft deep, will run the entire length of the buildings. The platform will be asphalted, and raised up to the regulation height. The -rooms throughout the whole premises will be 14ft high, and adequately ventilated. At present there are 20 men at work, and the erection of the premises is being pushed forward with all possible speed.
