FOOTBALL.

GORE v. STAR. A return match between the above clubs was played on the Gove ground yesterday, the visitors winning by 22 points to «if. The ground was in a very bad state owing to recent heavy ra-nt, being very slippery and dotted with pools of water on the l'jwer part. ' At an early stage the ball became greasy and heavy, but despite this drawback the Star backs handled the leather with remarkable accuracy, and it was in this department of the game that they showed most superiority over the local men, who indulged in little or no passing. This visitors ran up a score of 11 points in the first spell (one goal and two tries). Bain scored twice and Strang once. In this spell the Gore men were kept defending almost the whole time, and they very rarely contrived to get the ball past the halfway flag. Some interesting play was shown in the first half of the second spell, in which Gore had a decided advantage, but want of training told its tale, and the Star team had things pretty well their own way in the latter part of the game, adding 11 points (one goal j ond two tries) to their total. The scores were ; obtained by Bain, Donaldson and Jenkins. It should be mentioned that towards the end of the game, Gore played only thirteen men, two of the team having to retire through injuries received. For the Star, Shand, Bain and Stead were the pick, the first-named playing an especially ' good game. Donaldson, Jenkins and Murphy were the best of a very even lot of forwards. On the Gore side, Martin, at centre threequarter, did an immense amount of work, his collaring being very effective. Bobson and Brown also did well amongst the backs. Carroll, McKechnie and Mulvey were about the best of the forwards. Mr R. Galbraith had control of the game, and gave entire satisfaction to both teams.
