LONG LIVE THE PRINCE !
Today there is being celebrated throughout that portion of the world dominated by English rule, the o6th anniversary of the birth of the Prince of Wales. He holds a place in Anglo-Saxon hearts second only to that occupied by his illustrious mother, her gracious Majesty, Queen Victoria ; and we feel we are echoing a world-wide sentiment when we say : Long live the Prince I AVhile the outstanding events that have marked the career of the Heir Apparent to the Britis-h throne, are tolerably familiar to all of his prospective subjects in every part of the Empire, & few concise facts found in that matter-of-fact volume, yclept ' Hazell's Annual,' may not be devoid of interest. They are as follow : — H.E.H. Albert Edward, Phince of Wales, was born at Buckingham Palace, Nov. 9th, 1841 ; created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester, by patent under the Great Seal, on Dec. 4th of the same year ; baptised at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, Jan. 25th, '42. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford (D.C.L. '68), and at, Trinity Co.Jege, Cambridge (LL.D.). and Edinburgh University (LL.D.) ; also LL.D. Dublin ('6B) and Calcutta ('74). Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Prince of Wales, Duke of Saxony, Princo of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Great Steward of Scotland, Duke of Cornwall and Rothsay, Earl of Chester, Carrick, and Dublin, Earon Renfrew, and Lord of the Isles, K.G., K T K.P., G.C.8., G.C.5.1., G.C.M.G.', G.C.1.E., P.C. He is personal A.D.O. to Her Mfljesty the Queen, a field-marshal of the forces, colouel-in-chief of Ist and 2nd Life Gunrds and Eoyal Horse Guards, colonel 10th Hussars, hon. colonel of the Oxford nnd the Cambridge University Corp*, of the Middlesex Civil Service Corps of Itifla Volunteers, of the 3rd Battalion Gordon Highlanders, and the Sutherland Highland Rifle Volunteers, hon. admiral of the Fleet. Holds the rank-of field-mirshal in the German army, and is colonol-m-chief of the 5Ui Pomeranian Bliiclier Hussars. Ha is also colonel of iho Austro-Hungari.in 12th Regiment of Hussars. Admitted to the Middle Temple, called to the bar and to ..the bench of thnn Society (Oct. 31st. '61). H.E.H. is an Elder Brother of Trinity House ; also Grand Muster of the United Grand Lodge, of Freemasons of England (74) ; President of the Society of Arts and of St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Mnrried (March 10th, '63) H.E.H. the Princess Alexandra Caroline Mary Charlotte Louisa Julia, eMe.st dnnghter of Christian IX., Kingof Dmim.irk, and sister of ib» Empress of Eussia nnd the King of Greece. On her marriage the House of Commons voted her an annual allowance of LIO,OOO, and L 30.000 in the event of her surviving the Prince. The Princo and Princess celebrated their silver wedding,.'Bß. In the winter of '71, while staying with his family at his country seat, Sandringham, Norfolk, the Prince was attacked with typhoid fever, which it was feared would prove fatal, but after several weeks' prostration he recovered, and on Feb. 27th, '72, be attonded a' public thanksgiving in St. Paul's Cathedral. He visited Canada and the United States in '59, and the Holy Land in '62, and went on a tour through India in '75-6. In company with tha Princess ho made a tour through Ireland ('BS), where he mot with a cordial reception. Ho evinced an active interest in the promotion of tho late series of Exhibitions held at South Kensington, nnd despite not a little opposition succeeded in establishing the Imperial Institute {q.v.). Iq '93 he became a member of tho Poor Law Commission ; and in '94 did important service to his country at St. Pstersburg, whither he went on the death of the Czar in November. In '90 he whs again brought into contact with the Czar Nicholas 11., whom he met and conducted to Balmoral! when, with the Czarina, he paid a visit to the Queen there in October. His daughteri Princess M>md, was married to Prince Charles of Denmark (July 21st). During the year nls-\ H.R.H. won the Derby and the St. L«jgnr, tho former victory exciting a scene of unparalled enthusiasm at Epsom.
