o ■ [ ABBEABS OF BENTS. ' At tho Otago Land Board meeting on Wednesday, the cases, of settlers on tbo Pomahaka Estate who had beon reported as being move thau a year (two instalments) iv I arrears with their rent were takoa into consideration as follow, : — G. W. Maxwell. — Five hnlC-yoar3 in arrears ; amount, £135 19a (id. — This lessee had been notified that he must pay one year's rent on or before tbe 18th October. — A letter was rend from a grain and agenoy company offering payment of one half-year's rent on account of arrears, although, they said, Maxwell did not desire them to do so. They would pay another half-yearly instalment in January, and a third after the crop had been received. — The lessee himself wrote stating that he could not see his way to pay more [ thau one rent now ■ and. another in six months, but he was quite satisfied that from this out ho would be able to pay his rent regularly. He had 50 acres in oats, and he was awaiting the decision of the Board to go ahead with thirty acres in grass and sixtyfive acres in .turnips and rapo. ■He had 200 sheep, including IGQ wa, and had h,id v good lanibiug. His store bills were almost regularly on the right side of the ledger, and showed that his wife was working as hard as he was. He was doiiit; his utmost to make a home for himself; and he had'spent £420 on the place together with three and a-half years' rent. — The Board agreed at the present time to accept the payment of one year's rent. James Burke.— Three half-years in arrears ; amount, £73 16s 6d. — In this case a cheque for a. half-year's rent had been forwarded, and the Board resolved to require ' that another payment be made within six weeks. Joseph Abernethy. — Three half-years in arrears; amount, £55 13s 9d. — lhis settler bnd been required to pay one year's rent, and hud forwarded a half-year's rent. Thomas Chapman. — Two half-years in arrears; amount, £50 12s 6d. — The previous resolution of the Board in this case was that the lessee must pay a half-year's rent on or before the 18th October, otherwise the Board would forfeit. The settler in question wrote stating that during the time he had held the ■ section he had to the present time paid all rents aud complied with all conditions. In January last he leased another section of 320 acres, paying nearly £100 for rent and improvements. The reason lie was behind with his reDt wag that last year his wool was sold at the January aud February sales at very low prices, and only realised £70. This year he had 80 acres in turnips, but owing to the dry summer they had been almost a failure, and owing to this he had had to .buy turnips for his sheep at a cost of, £50 At present he had in crop eighty acres in outs (which were above ground), and eighty acres in oats (partly atove ground), while he had seventy acres to go in turnips, and on every one of his three sections there were permanent improvements thai were worth more thau he owed. He could sell his sheep, and thus raise money to pay the rent, but that would be like killing the. goose that laid the golden eggs, and be asked that the Board should wait till after' the shearing. — The opinion was expressed by members of the Board that the lessee could easily get the money wherewith to pay tho rent. — It was resolved that an extension of fourteen days be allowed within which ., a half-year's rent should be paid. ' ' • Mrs Ellen Clements. —Pour half-years iv arrears ; amount, £'Ji 17s.— This lessee, who had received notice that a half-year's rent must be paid on or before the 18th of Oct., wrote stating that she would not be able to pay until the 15th of December. Her crop had been destroyed by fire, otherwise the Board would have got her rent in full, and she asked for a reply so that she might know Whether she was to go on putting in turnips or not. — The Board agreed to allow the extension of time applied for. Soren Hansen. — Four and a-half sixmonthly terms in arrears; amount, £101 17s 6d. — This lessee had boon notified that ho must pay on.c year's rent by the 18th f October if he wished to retain his section. — A letter was read from him asking the Board to reconsider its decision. He had, he said, taken £300 last year off his cropping, or a little more than £2 to an acre ol crop cut. Out of that he paid ■ £150 of old dr,bts r spent I about £30 on buildings,, and helped his son to the extent of £60 on the latter's section. He also paid to the Receiver of Land jßevenue £23, and he lost two horses which [ he had to replace at a cost of nearly £40. i He had also got grass seed to lay down I another 40 acres. He was not well stocked with implements, and if the Board could see I its way to. be lpnient with him ■ for a few [ months more, by which time his son would ; be able to pay him, and his own crops would I have come in, he thought, looking at last i year's returns, that. he would be able to pay up. He eouUTmanage in November to make one payment, but that was all he could do unless he sold his grass seed and left his land idle — The Chitf Commissioner and Mr Dallas observed that the lessee had put himself back' by helping his son. — The Board resolved that a year's rent must be paid within one month,
