" There is no hope for me ?" he asked, faintly. " None whatever," replied tho beautiful girl, her eyes filling with compassionate tears. When he reached the door he turned towards her again. " I have to thank you for one thing," he said bitterly. "What is that?" she enquired. "You have not told me you would be a sister to me." " I thought of that," she rejoined hurriedly, " but I sud-. denly remembered — —" "What?" he demanded, hurriedly. " That I had promised this morning to marry your father." Politician (arranging for music afc a political meeting) : " Isn't that a big I price ? You may not have to play half-a-dozen times during the evening." Brass Band Leader : " But, my dear sir, we have to sit there and listen to the speeches." " Bridget, this is altogether too much ; you have a new fellow in the kitchen every week." " Well, ma'am, j you see, the food in this house is so ) bar* that no one will come here for t longer than a week."
