Orient, in a bunker where tea was chiefly .stored. The compartment was watertight 1 and the fire confined to it. Owing to the •• - ijtaantity of water pourad into the steamer ' . she had a dangerous Hat, and had to be '.- hauled on an even keel before the operation of extinguishing the fire could be ■ proceeded with. The fire at one time ' assumed a serious aspect. The bunker ' where the outbreak occurred was leaky ' . and unable to bold sufficient water to ; quenoh the fire. It was feared the walls .. of the bunker would crack and let the i fire spread beyond control. .""•••' ■ August 11. The fire in the Orient was soon subdued after the door between the water- . tight compartments, which had been left - . open and allowed the water to escape, ■ was closed by a diver.
