— ♦ Christmas Carols will be sung at St Saviour's Churoh, Mataura, on Christmas night. Mr Gladstone will spend the winter in Cannes and Biarritz. Much-needed rain has fallen throughout Viotoria, The ' Taieri Advocate ' asserts that the closing of certain hotels in the district has caused inconsiderable inconvenience, but the amount of liquor consumed at home has largely inoreased, and the amount of beer in sgal and lOgal kegs consigned to residents would astonish the Temperance party. Hone Heke, speaking afc Greytown North of the Bergeam-at-Arms appoint- ' ment, said it was broaking the law, yet Ithe Premier who tbus broke the law refused to shake hands with Kerei Kaihau, a Native, because the Native broke the law. The ' Taieri Advocate reports that the crops on the southern portion of the plain are looking very well, and there is every indication that — provided, of course, the weather is favorable — the 'yields will be large. Unfortunately the yellow weed may bo seen in abundance, particularly in the Otakia distmt, and some of the fields are simply blazes of yellow. The Canadian thistle, too, is very muoh in evidence in portions of tbe plain. The following appointments and promotions in the department of Trade and Customs are gazetted :— W. B. Montgomery, landing waiter and tide surveyor, Bluff; A. V. Perm, laodiog waiter, Ohriatohurch ; E. T. W. McLaurin, warebousekeeper, Auckland; H. J. Marsh, record clerk, head office; D. Johnston, collector. InvercargiU; E. Pasley, collector, Poverty Bay; A. Carter, oollestor, Wairau. A firm of shoemakers announces in its advertisement — " Our danciog slippers for young ladies are simply immense." Amongst those re-appointed superintendent collectors of agricultural statistics are : Peter Nelson, for the counties of Bruce, Tuapeka, and Clutha, and William Russell for Southland, Wallace. Fiord, Stewart Island and adjacent islands. B.N.Z. shares on the down grade; Colonial's rising. With a few exceptions, the Labor party has become a mere pack to do the bidding of the Government.—' O.D. Times.'
