A special meeting of this Board was held ■ on Saturday— Messrs Kinross: ,(chairman), Strang, Farr, Alliaon, Campbell, Cameron,, v McOallum and Fleming being 'pres9nfc-?-to.u consider Mr Allison's motion that a previous resolution of the Board should be rescinded. The motion referred to was : * That the con. " tract for forming, the , Waimumu flood .channel be not interfered with.' A petition was read from the residents of Charltou and the neighborhood, asking tha t the contract be not proceeded with, and'" another from the inhabitants of Mataura and thereabout?, praying ;that (the work, as originally intended, should be completed. The objection was raised that the people signing the first petition were nob interested in the matter, but a precisely similar; fault/ was found with the other. ; Mr McCallum said that Mr 'Allison, the gentleman who now objected to the channel, was the very gentleman at whose instigation the work was commenced. ', \ ?'.* Mr Allison denied that such was the pas 1 , . explaining at length what; he ha I done. la answer to enquiries the Engineer said it certainly had been the intention, all through, to tap the Waimnmu Cr-iek. There could not be any mistake about that, ; ■■' • ' I Mr Cameron related every thing in connection with the matter, from the beginning . till then. He argued that although the townspeople of Malaura, whose names were appended to the petition he had presented, were not ratepayers, still, as the Town Board had tq pay 'part of the cost, their request was entitled to consideration. He also showed that the flood channel had been intended to benefit the township, but at the request of the then proprietors of the land now held by Mr Allison its position was shifted further up the river so as to benefit a greater part of the district-. -./ *»» A deputation, consisting of -Mr McLaren! and otherp, waited on the Board , and f c$ m pressed themselves iv favor of Mr Allison's motion. The specifications originally prepared by the Engineer were read, and the alterations subsequently made; were, ex--plained, A long argument ensued, but eventually Mr Allison's motion was carried*. Mr Fleming moved : 'That the channel be lefc as it is at the stream for a distance of three chains.' ; .5 The motion was seconded by Mr Strang. After discussion, during whioh Mr Cameron stated that the Botion of the Board would, benefit two or three selfish individuals at the expense of many ratepayers. , .:. ■■/ .1 Mr MoCallum asked if Mr Allison wbulcb promise, if the motion were carried, not -to threaten the Board , with legal proceedings should his property, be injured by flood?. ' Mr Allison replied that be would not do .so.. if the Board agreed to form a permanent; mouth to, the channel, and stop the "work 3 where it was. He would not bother them' unnecessarily. . n ,s' Mr Fleming thought Mr Alliaon should . ;ive a definite promise, and other members svero of a Bimilar opinion. The motion wao
passed. Mr Cameron alone dissenting, upo the understanding that Mr Allison would nc hold the Board responsible for future dam age.. ;. ' , ,' ' . •
