A female of t,b. lunatic asylum named Green,-in a sworn statement, made very serious charges against the management and officials 6f the asylum. The substance of her statement is that she lias been illtreared by some of the female attendants; that they dressed themselves tip as ghosts to frighten her ; looked her up iu a padded room, telling her that they were going to an undertaker to order her coffin. Subsequently ono of the attendants came to her as a sister of mercy, asking make a confession before ,the coffin canrai She also complains that she was dragged by her hair to tho bathroom, and when sho refused to go they slapped her on tho face. The complaints have been forwarded to Government. Petitions praying that tho Shop Hours Closing Bill may bo given effect to aro being extensively circulated. An official inquiry into 'the stranding of the s.s. Chelmsford at Opotiki was held yesterday by Mr Hill, Collector of Customs. The evidence has been forwarded to Wellington. Dunedin, May 29. The Hon. G. M‘Lean authorises tho Daily Times to contradict tho report that ho has asked the Ministry to appoint him as Agent-General, and states he has made uo application of any kind to any Minister in connection with the position. A largely attended public mooting passed resolutions in favor of early closing and in support of the principle of the Shop Hours Bill, but several amendments and modifications were suggested as necessary.
