Those Awful Reporters. — The reporters of the olden times seem to have been very much like those of modern days. Away hack in 1771, Wedderburn, afterwards Lord Loughborough, was asked if ho had really delivered a certain speech which the newspapers imputed to him, and replied: “Why, to be sure, thoro are in the report a few things which I did say, but many things which I am glad I did not say, and some things which I wish I could have said.” “In the Sweet By and Bye.”—Several gentlemen in Blenheim are interesting themselves in the direction of getting up a concert, the proceeds from which to be devoted to the cricket ground. With the amount of musical talent in our midst there should he no difficulty in getting up a really good concert, and if the promoters of the affair fix the charge for admission at a low price there is no doubt that a very respectable sum will he realised. We understand that a meeting of those interested will shortly be held to arrange preliminaries. West Coast Weather. —The following weather paragraph from the Hokitika Guardian should be preserved as a model by budding penny-a-liners : - On Thursday we had a heavy but transitory hailstorm. Angular lumps of ice about the size of pigeon eggs thundered on to our iron-roofed dwellings, and were hurled amongst the blossoming fruit trees, happily without doing any perceptible damage. About midnight, ushered in by a hurricane blast from old Boreas, we had a grand electrical display, accompanied by rolling volleys of Heaven’s artillery crashing in cloudy war—a regular Miltonic agony scene of the most sensational description, and upon this followed the deluge.

The Kimberley Goldfields. —The Government resident at Derby, who returned there from an inland tour extending as far as the goldfields, on the 27th October, reports that another very handsome nugget weighing over 32 ounces, was brought into the Warden’s camp the day before he left the field, where, speaking generally, satisfaction and confidence prevailed. A considerable rush has taken place *o Riehenda Field, which in the opinion of exncrioneed and reliable men, will prove rich in gold-bearing reefs. lie met Mr Brockman with the first set of machinery safely over Eitzruy river, also Messrs White and Cohn, with their machinery, getting well on the road. He further states that two more powerful sets of crushing machines were safely landed at Derby nc;n the s.s. Flinders on the lOili of this month.

Tenders. —The Education Department require tenders for the erection of a porch at the Springlands school, and for making desks for the some school. Full particulars may be obtained from Mr J. E. Robinson, the Secretary.

Licensino Committee. At the meeting of the Spring Creek Licensing Committee the transfer of the licence of the Ferry Hotel was granted from William Hunter to Daniel Duggan. The Comir : ttee was represented by Messrs Murray (Chairman,) R. Soper and J. Mills. Cricket. —The match A Section of the Wairau C.O. v. Blenheim C.C. will be continued this afternoon, and it should prove very interesting. The Blenheim men are only two runs to the bad, with no wickets down, mid should all the team turn up an excifug finish is anticipated.

The Empire City.—As showing the state that business lias arrived at in. Wellington, one firm has found it necessary to post up in its office the following : _ - Notice. —The hours of attendance in this office are—to canvassers for church subscriptions, 10 to 2 ; hook and insurance agents, 2 to 4; commercial travellers, beggars and advertising men, all day. We attend to our own business at night.

County Council. —The candidates for the two vacancies in this august body were noirhutted to-day, ”i the persons of Messrs R. Beaumont and H. D. Vavasour. There being no other candidates, and only the two vacancies to fill, Mr S. J. Macalister, the Returning Officer, declared them duly elected. This is the third time that the Returning Officer has attended at the Awatere to receive nominations, and we are glad to notice that at last somebody appears to take an vterest in the matter.

Lawn Tennis. —The matches arranged between the Wairau nnd the Marlborough Lawn Tennis Clubs will he played at the Marlborough Club grounds in Maxwell Road this afternoon, commencing at two o’clock. The following is a b'st of the matches and the order in which they vv. 11 ho played :—Ladies’ Double - Misses Douslin and R. Clark (Wairau) v Mrs Kolias and Miss A. Farrnar (Marlborough) Gentlemen’s Double--Rogers and Thompson v Green and G. Lucas. Gentlemen’s Singles—Do Castro v Na”n, Hillman v Conolly. Lad ms’ Single—Miss Honshu v Mrs Kellas. Tho fo'lowing tenders for works were then opened : -Foruvng Upper Spring Crook Road, W, J. Rob'nson 10s per chain ; Cross street Retry Road, H. ;C. llenriokson, 9s per chain, W. Dcol, 10s per chain ; fonning Sutherland street, W. Duel 10s per chain, 11. C. Henrickson 12s 6d. The lowest tenders were accepted in each case. The collector (Mr Rush) applied for authority to suo for rates. Peiir-’ssion was granted and. he was ordered to take immediate action. Tho following accounts wero passed for payment:—W. Robinson, £lO ; R. Roskruge, £39 8s Od; Marlborough T -ies, £5 Is; Hospital, £l9 10s 6d ; Collector, £3 ; Otblsen, £1 ss.

A Walking Purse.-A ha. .nan who was employed at one of the grandstand booths at the Melbourne races entered upon his services fr’ly equipped for action. The assistants wore taking substantial toll out of the proceeds of the business passing through their hands, and secret p’-rangcroents were consequently made for keeping watch over their doings. The bai.nan in question was noticed during the pressure of custom to slip a sixpense Into bis collar, and upon his being taken and searched nearly £3 in smeH coins were found concealed upon h-.s person. It was found that he had long stockings on, while his underclothing was tightly fastened by belts at the Hoes, so that lie formed, in fact, an animated purse for the occasion. Money dropped in at the neck was quite secure from falling out when he moved about, and he doubtless anticipated realising a fair pile when he undressed himself. 110 got three months instead.

Breach of the Licensing Act.— ln giving judgment yesterday in the case against Humber, one of the publicans who had been charged with a breach of the Licensing Act, Mr Allen, R.M., fined defendant 40s, with 19s costs, the com lotion to be recorded on his license. With regard to the second charge, of selling liquor to a prohibited person, ho would deal with it differently. As he had already stated, Humber’s evidence was of a most extraordinary character. He stated that when he took possession of tne hotel Campbell had not given him any prohibition orders ; that he was certain ho had not seen any orders; and that Campbell said nothing whatever about John Allen, He also sworo that on November the lltli he did not know Allen. On that evidence His Worship said he would dismiss the caso, but would take time to consider whether he would give instructions to the police to proceed against him on a more serious charge. Spring CriKK River Board. —The Spring Creek River Board held tlieir usual monthly meeting on Wednesday last, when there were present Messrs G. Dodson (Chairman), J. Gifford, J. H. Redwood and L. Dodson. A deputation consisting of Messrs Rush, Jones and Chaytor waited on the Board for the purpose of requesting that a continuation of bo made the bank from Mr Prichard’s to the Wairau. Mr Chaptor said the settlers were willing to do the work, and to take payment in debentures bearing interest at six per cent, the money to be raised annually by a special rate over their lands. The Board decided to inspect the place on the following Friday. It was also resolved to bring Fne Loans to Local Bodies Act into force in the district. The Collector was ordered to suo for all rates at once.
