At a meeting in connection with State aided colonisation, a scheme was submitted, and it was suggested that the capital should ho subscribed by the public, with an Imperial guarantee of three per cent interest, the colonies to grant laud to emigrants, and the money to be repaid at the end of thirty years, with! percent interest. In the House of Commons Mr Kinibor asked whether the Government were prepared to entertain such a scheme. Mr W. 11. Smith replied that the question was one of considerable importance and the scheme a novel one, and the Government would require to consider it with great care before arriving at a decision.
August 10. The statement made by Mr m Smith in the House of Commons yesterday, regarding State aided emigration was as follows:—Tho Irnj >orial Government was unable to guarantee advances to settlers, and doubted whether Colonial Govern meats would approve of such an arrangement, and it would he useless to invite the latter to cooperate, since the Imperial Government was unable to propose to Barliamout a scheme for a guarantee.
