HAVELOCK SPORTS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Christmas Sports commenced here on Boxing Day as usual with a Regatta which wsb well attended, many country people coming in to enjoy the outiDg. The weather was beautifql and all that could be desired after the heavy showers of rain which fell during the night. More wind for the boats would perhaps have been an improvement. The first event was the First Class Sailing Race—Frst prize £0 ; Second prize £2. There were seven entries, and with the exception of the Kingfisher, all the boat 3 had a good start, but as the wind freshened this old favorite resumed her old position of leading the van and the result was Mr Bonricks— Kingfisher .. 1 Mr 0 Pope’s—Kercperu 2 Then came the Two Oared Gig Boat Race. First prize £4 ; Second prize £l* for which three entered and finished . C. Pope’s—. Little P»3nuty ... 1 A. Maule’s—fit. Andrew .. 2 For the Second CDs* Sailing Race. First prize £ 1; Second £l, there were ouly tines entries, but it was a very good race between the leading boats F. Houghton’s—Rob Roy .. 1 C. Pope’s—Keneperu .. 2 The Paired Oared Race came next. First prize £2 ; Second LI. This race was closely contested throughout, being well pulled from s art to finishA i.laiih’s—Little Beauty ... 1 0. Pope's— Friction ... ..2 The Sculling Race—First prize £l, Second 10s, caused a good deal of exciteinent and after a tough pull resulted in Jabez Wells’—Little Beauty .. <1 Walter Gibbon’s—Friction .. 2 For the Boys’ Race, under 16, there were only two entries Wells’ boat being first. The grand‘race of the day for women only. Hiss prize £1 ; second 1 Os, caused immense fan, one boat brii g a little overr weighted, but the puling all round was worthy of imitation. Mrs George and Mrs William Pope 1 Mrs Elt Wells and Mrs 2 For the Swimming Race, first prize £1; second ss, we had three competitors. J. Pickering 1 James Brownlee .. . . .. 2 The duck liuut and grotsy polo terminated the acquafcie sports. Both events were mulled, as the duck hunter should
have been in a four oare 1 boat instead of a pair oared, and the greasy pole through some oversight was rotten, and the first competitor went overboard pole and all, the pole breaking in the middle and thus preventing any contest. The afternoon finished up with races for children who flocked together in great numbers and pocke'ed their wins n ngs with great glee.
